FIVE STEPS TO RECLAIM YOUR LIFE STORY

How to Flip Your Life: Stop Drifting & Take Control

Most of us don’t realise that we’re trapped in a story we didn’t consciously write. Every thought, every belief, and every action is shaping the life we’re living right now. The problem? Too many of us are stuck in a loop ~ reliving the same struggles, making the same mistakes, and wondering why nothing changes.

Pain is a wake-up call. The bigger the pain, the longer you've ignored the signs telling you to take charge and change direction. Divorce, failure, burnout, dis-ease, these are not just events; they’re signals. And if you don’t listen, life will keep turning up the volume until you do.

Step 1: Step Off the Boat

Imagine life as a river, and most people are floating down it, going wherever the current takes them. No control. No direction. Just drifting. The first step to changing your life is recognising that you’re drifting and getting off the river.

Stop. Take stock of where you are. Be brutally honest about what isn’t working.

This isn’t about wallowing in regret ~ it’s about seeing reality for what it is so you can make a decision: The choice is yours, keep drifting, or you can take control!

Step 2: Create Your Own Compass

You wouldn’t take off on a journey without a destination. Yet most most us go through life with no clear vision of where we want to go. That’s gambling your life on chance. Instead, create a direction for the next 20 years, 10 years, 5 years, 12 months, and the next 90 days.

Start by defining 5-7 key areas of your life ~ Your Life Buckets:

  • Finance

  • Family

  • Career/Mission

  • Spirituality

  • Relationships

  • Health

Step 3: Burn the Deadweight

Before you can build the life you want, you need to cut out what no longer serves you. Write down everything in each Life Bucket that you’re no longer willing to accept. Toxic relationships, dead-end jobs, limiting beliefs ~ whatever is draining you needs to go.

Some bridges will need to be burned. Others may just need to be closed for maintenance. Either way, clearing out the deadweight creates space for something better.

Step 4: Flip the Script

Once you know what you don’t want, the next step is flipping it. Write down the exact opposite of your “don’t want” list. That becomes your blueprint ~ the nucleus of the life you do want to create. The way you want to feel, the health you want, the people you want to surround yourself with.

Step 5: Become the Author of Your Own Life

If you continue to do what you’ve always done, you’ll continue to get what you’ve always gotten. Change is not optional ~ it’s necessary. The choice is simple: remain a passenger, drifting along in a life you never truly designed, or take the wheel and curate a life that’s truly yours.

When you put yourself first ~ your mission, your growth, your well-being ~ you don’t just change your life. You become the kind of person who can give more to those who rely on you. And that’s the real shift.

No more drifting. No more waiting. Your life is yours to build.
